We practice preventive dentistry to ensure the health of our patient’s teeth and gums, to avoid cavities and gum disease, enamel wear and more. Good preventive care will greatly reduce the risk of getting cavities, gingivitis, and periodontitis. Periodontitis is a cascade of problems that occur when gingivitis is left untreated. Several factors work together to cause gum disease to worsen and lead to significant bone loss and loose teeth. Research shows a direct correlation between periodontal disease and heart disease, increased risk of infection in people who have diabetes and low birth weight babies. These health issues can be controlled by good preventive care.
Regular cleanings are performed two times a year on periodontally healthy patients. During these appointments x-rays will be taken and proper home care will be reviewed. Preventive care will be discussed and practiced, such as brushing and flossing techniques. Products that help reduce cold sensitive teeth will be recommended. As always, a balanced diet provides for an overall healthy mind and body.
Periodontal treatments include deep scaling and root planing of the periodontally infected pockets of 5mm or more. These deeper cleanings will remove the plaque, bacteria and tartar from below the gumline. During these treatments an anesthetic will be used to ensure our patients comfort. Scaling and root planing is often followed by an adjunctive therapy such as a localized delivery of Arestin antibiotic treatment. Following periodontal therapy our patients will require ongoing maintenance appointments every 3 months to sustain health.

If the root canal of a tooth becomes infected, it can result in sharp pain and swelling if left untreated, eventually leading to tooth loss. Dr. Harris can provide root canal therapy and alleviate pain and preserve the natural tooth using local anesthetic for pain free treatment.
